Yutaka Sone Travel 1987—88

1.09.2016

In the late 80ies (1987—88), after finishing his architectural studies, Yutaka Sone travelled for two years throughout the Middle East, and made diapositives of the medieval architecture and the generation of local people living there.

In 1989 Sone made a selection from these slides, which are presented together as a thematic whole. In light of the far-reaching impact of current events in the Middle East the work has taken on an array of poignant overtones, given the fact that a significant portion of the buildings he photographed have since been destroyed, just as a number of the individuals he portrayed have either been killed or seen their lives drastically overturned.

Yutaka Sone’s Travel 1987—88', compiled by the artist in 89, will be presented at Muhka for the first time, from 13 - 29 January 2017.

Yutaka Sone (°1965, Shizuoka, Japan; lives and works in Los Angeles) trained as an architect before becoming a multidisciplinary visual artist. Moving effortlessly from one medium to another – including marble and rattan sculpture to film, photography and painting - Sone keeps studios in Los Angeles, USA, in Chongwu, China and in Michoacán, Mexico.
