Yutaka Sone's Flying Chairs is modeled after a funfair attraction of ying chairs located close to the artist’s marble studio in Chongwu, a small village outside Xiamen in Fujian Province. Yutaka Sone has been studying the ying chairs with his longtime collaborator and studio director Jiang Zhi Xian since 2006. Sone sourced an exceptionally large 2.5 x 2.5 x 2 m block of marble for the production of this piece. Flying Chairs is the most ambitious work in the artist’s amusement series to date.
